Samsung Galaxy Fonblet has 5.8-inch display

Samsung's Galaxy Fonblet will be massive with a 5.8-inch screen and Android Jelly Bean

Samsung is about to announce a 5.8-inch smartphone with a ridiculous name. Dubbed the Galaxy Fonblet, the device will be available in Europe in white and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The device seems to be an extension of Samsung’s Korea-only Galaxy Player design as it has the same 5.8-inch qHD 960x540 pixel LCD display panel. The difference is that unlike the Galaxy Player it'll have the required modem and other phone tech to send and recieve calls.

Other hardware specs remain elusive and it’s not exactly clear what section of the market this device is aimed at.

We can see how this happened, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and indeed flagships from many other rival manufacturers have now caught up with the previously freakish 5-inch Galaxy Note models, so, if it wants to have distinctively larger-than-average smartphone handsets in its product line-up it need to up the ante.

Is 5.8-inches getting too unwieldy though? We think it might be.

The original Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inches took some getting used to and for some the expansion to 5.5-inches with the Galaxy Note 2 was a bit too much.

Of course, it’s still not as big as Huawei’s 6.1-inch Ascend Mate which many CES 2013 attendees found a bit unmanageable.

We expect we'll be seeing more of the Galaxy Fonblet, hopefully with a new name, at Mobile World Congress in February.
