Next ZTE smartphones will use Nvidia Tegra 4 chips

ZTE's next-generation smartphone devices will use Nvidia Tegra 4 processor hardware

The next wave of handsets from growing Chinese smartphone-maker ZTE will make use of Nvidia’s new Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i processor chips, according to an announcement from Nvidia.

In a press release, Nvidia has revealed its newly announced quad-core chips will appear in next-gen ZTE devices, with specific mention that the Chinese manufacturer will make a phone with the Tegra 4 processor and will make use of the company’s i500 4G LTE connectivity chip.

Interestingly, it appears ZTE will use the standard Tegra 4 Cortex-A15 chip and add the i500 connectivity chip separately, as the release does not mention Nvidia’s recently announced Cortex-A9 quad-core Tegra 4i chip with integrated i500 4G capability.

‘This is a clear demonstration of ZTE’s ability to quickly develop, and bring to market, market-leading devices running the industry’s latest technologies,’ said He Shiyou, executive vice president at ZTE.

The phone, which hasn’t been named, will allegedly arrive in the first half of 2013 and is expected to make full use of the Tegra 4’s HD playback capabilities, suggesting a high-end display. Previously the first Tegra 4 powered devices weren’t expected to arrive until August.

The last high-end model which ZTE produced was the Grand S but this was based on a Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon processor. ZTE has previously made Nvidia Tegra based phones such as the Grand X but is returning to Tegra tech with the latest Tegra 4 chip.

‘We’re proud to continue our pioneering partnership with NVIDIA and are looking forward to offering more Tegra-powered devices, which are defining a new generation of phones offering premium mobile computing experiences,' said He, ‘Our Tegra 4 smartphones will provide full HD entertainment and multimedia experiences that consumers will love.’

Phil Carmack, senior vice president of Nvidia’s mobile business, added:‘ZTE's newest super phones will show off Tegra 4's processing power, efficiency and unprecedented capabilities. They’re a great example of what the market expects from one of the world's largest phone makers.’

Expect to hear more on this from Mobile World Congress.
