The Nexus 4 is now receiving an over-the-air update bringing Android up to 4.2.2
Android 4.2.2 is now rolling out over-the-air (OTA) to the Nexus 4.
The update is primarily a bugfix patch, mainly addressing issues with Bluetooth audio streaming and a few other minor hiccups.
In terms of functionality, it does add some quick toggles accessed by a long press which enable you to turn Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on or off.
Google also labels the JDQ39 update as being a general ‘performance and stability’ patch too.
However, the main change is the removal of unofficial 4G capability, which reports indicated was accessible by an exploit.
After the Nexus 4 launched numerous reports pointed out it had a 4G modem on its Qualcomm chipset but didn’t make use of it, but more recently clever users had figured out ways to access it.
The new 4.2.2 update now means this is no longer possible.
It’s a slightly bigger patch than the one we saw hitting the Nexus 10, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 earlier this week, clocking in at 54MB instead of 47MB.
Allegedly 4.2.2 will also introduce improvements to gesture keyboard input and may add multiple account functionality previously seen on Android tablets to phones as well.
Google also recently updated the Google Now search application for Android 4.1 and above, adding in more search functionality and notifications for music and films, as well as adding a homescreen widget and, in the case of 4.2 phones a lock-screen widget.
Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is expected to follow and it’s believed Google will announce the major platform update at its Google I/O event on May 15.
We’ll be watching Google’s announcements closely for more details on Android 5.0, so stay tuned for more information.
