Tablet Smackdown: Sony Xperia Z Tablet vs. iPad

Sony is unveiling a new tablet at Mobile World Congress that is sure to turn a few heads. The Xperia Z tablet is not only the world's thinnest 10.1-inch tablet at 6.9 millimeters, but it's also waterproof in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes, and weighs just a bit over a pound. But it's svelte design also makes it a competitive entry against the newest iPad. How does it stack up in other ways? Let's take a look.

Display

The Sony Xperia Z Tablet features a 1920 x 1200p, 10.1" display. That's not quite up to par with the iPad's 2048-by-1536p display, although the iPad's is slightly smaller at 9.7". Winner: The iPad

Camera

The Sony Xperia Z Tablet features an 8MP rear shooter and a 2MP up front. The iPad has a 5MP rear shooter and 1.3MP camera up front. The winner: Sony Xperia Z Tablet

Design

The Sony Xperia Z Tablet weighs a mere 1.04 pounds and is just .27 inches thick. Sony has also designed the tablet to be water-resistant in up to three feet for thirty minutes. The iPad, in contrast, weighs 1.44 pounds, is .37 inches thick and cannot even be splashed. Winner: Sony Xperia Z Tablet

Processor

This one is tricky to compare. The newest iPad feature a dual-core an A6X chip. The Xperia Z Tablet features a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. While it sounds faster on paper, we really have no way of knowing just yet. We'll have to wait and see. Winner: N/A

Memory

The Xperia Z Tablet features both 16GB and 32GB models, but also has memory expandable up to 64GB. Apple's iPad has no expandable memory slot. Winner: Xperia Z Tablet

Price

Both the Xperia Z Tablet and the iPad start at $499 for a 16GB version and both jump $100 when you double the memory. This is a very competitive price for such an outstanding Android tablet, but it's in-line with Apple's best-seller. Winner: Tie

Summary

Yes, we're comparing Apples and oranges. The iPad and the Sony Xperia Z tablet offer different operating systems, app ecosystems, the list goes on. But they're both competing in the premium tablet category for a similar type of consumer. In this case, it seems as if the Xperia Z Tablet offers quite the fight against Apple's iPad. It's ultra thin, ultra light, made of quality materials and features a better camera, expandable memory and a potentially faster processor. The iPad's pixel count may beat it by a hair, but it wins or ties in every other race. Winner: Xperia Z Tablet
