Reports indicate Amazon had been planning to push its much-rumoured Kindle smartphone out the door by Q2 of 2013, but word from Asian touchscreen suppliers claims things have been pushed back to sometime after June.
The news comes via Chinese rumour source DigiTimes, which cites unnamed tipsters in the ‘flat panel supply chain’ who claim Foxconn, Amazon’s manufacturer for the device, has encountered a few issues.
‘The production of Amazon’s much-fanfared smartphone is still under its engineering verification test (EVT) period due to issues related to its mobile platform,’ the report said.
‘The development of the smartphone is being handled by FIH (Foxconn International Holdings) subsidiary Ensky Tech, which has been responsible for the production of Amazon’s e-book readers and tablets.’
Amazon’s original schedule pegged the device to finish its verification tests in Q1 2013, ready for mass production in Q2, but the sources suggest that these problems mean Ensky Tech won’t be able to start volume production in June.
Rumours surrounding Amazon’s Kindle smartphone are still yet to be confirmed by the company, but have been circulating since early in 2012. Many analyst believe Amazon will seek to capitalise on the success of its Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets which have proven extremely popular in the US.
Should such a handset make it to market it’s expected that, like the Kindle tablets, it will retail at a low price point and run Google’s Android operating system, heavily modified with Amazon’s interface overlay and pre-loaded app suite.
All of which will point squarely at Amazon’s own services, so there’ll be no Google Play, instead you’ll have the Amazon App Store, LoveFilm, Amazon Prime and Amazon’s Silk browser in place of Chrome.
