Experiencing the Iditarod through Instagram
On the first Saturday of every March, approximately fifty mushers and their teams of sled dogs gather in Anchorage, Alaska, to kick off the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The race takes competitors on a more than 1,100 mile journey across Alaska, starting in the south at Anchorage and finishing along the state’s western coast in Nome.
While the record time of 8 days, 19 hours and 46 minutes was set in 2011, the race can often take as many at 15 days to complete, exposing competitors to the most extreme weather Alaska has to offer.
For photos from the Iditarod, follow the #iditarod hashtag and visit the location page for the starting line in Anchorage. Learn more about the Iditarod and track the mushers’ progress on the Alaska Dispatch website and through their @alaskadispatch Instagram feed.
