The Galaxy S4's Smart Scroll eye-tracking controls have turned up in leaked screenshots
Reports that Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy S4 flagship would feature eye-tracking scrolling control have apparently been confirmed.
SamMobile received a tip-off from an unnamed source along with several screenshots showing the menu interface and the ability to toggle Smart Scroll and Smart Pause on or off, along with several settings for things like scrolling speed.
According to an update to the report, the screens are actually from forthcoming firmware for the Galaxy S3 but it is reiterated that an ‘insider’ has confirmed the Galaxy S4 will have these features.
It makes sense actually, the Galaxy S4 will introduce the new capability while an update patch will add it in to the predecessor too. We’ve seen Samsung do similar things before.
This is also the first time we’ve seen the Smart Scroll and Smart Pause titles for these functions, previously it was known that Samsung had patented ‘Eye Scroll’ but it seems the company is now branding it in-line with its existing Smart Stay functionality.
Smart Stay meant the Galaxy S3 could detect whether or not you were looking at the display by using the front-facing camera. It could keep the display powered on when you were viewing it and turn it off when you looked away. However, the feature didn’t work so well with every user.
Smart Scroll will allow you to browse web pages and move around the interface simply by glancing at different parts of the display, the full description says:
‘The screen will start to scroll automatically if the device detects that you are looking at the screen’.
The screenshots also show Smart Rotation, which uses your viewing angle to orientate the screen rather than relying solely on accelerometers and gyroscopes. Smart Pause apparently pauses any video playing when you look away.
