Following the Galaxy S4 launch, Samsung is preparing to put its own slant on the mobile gaming space as it’s gearing up to launch the Samsung Game Pad in May.
The device is compatible with the Galaxy S4, but will likely work with subsequent Samung Galaxy devices as well as it’s reported to fit handsets up to 6.3-inches in size – interestingly one of the rumoured sizes for the Galaxy Note 3.
The Game Pad can function in a number of roles – it can cradle the Galaxy S4 to create a portable gaming console or you can hook the phone up to a TV via HDMI. Either way, the gamepad connects to the phone via Bluetooth.
Reports indicate the controller won’t be compatible with older Samsung Galaxy models such as the Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2, which seems a bit weird to us considering they all have Bluetooth. We’ve contacted Samsung’s representatives to get confirmation of this and will update you when we hear more.
Samsung has set the controller up in a configuration that’ll be instantly familiar to most gamers – it has dual analogue sticks, a D-Pad, four front buttons and two shoulder triggers. The whole unit is powered by a AA battery so you can easily carry a few spares on the go.
A price hasn’t yet been revealed and although we don’t yet know if the accessory will hit the UK it seems fairly likely. You’ll get eight free games bundled in with the pad and as many as 80 Android games will be compatible with the controller by the time it is released.
Launching the Game Pad is a sensible move by Samsung as many mobile gamers are left without the satisfaction of physical controls and the feedback they provide. The Galaxy S4 is also an ideal gaming device with its next-gen Exynos 5 Octa 1.6GHz eight-core processor, 5-inch Full HD 1080p display and sizeable 2,600mAh battery pack.
