Sony’s next batch of Xperia Android handsets, the Xperia L and Xperia SL, are still only the stuff of rumour right now, but that hasn’t stopped them turning up for pre-order on a number of retail sites.
Amazon and eBuyer both have placeholder pages listing the devices, but sites LamdaTek and Micro Aid have actual pre-order pages in place.
The Xperia SP is said to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960T dual-core processor, which can be clocked as high as 1.7GHz and sports an Adreno 320 GPU and 1GB of RAM. The display is a 4.55-inch 720p LCD while on the back is an 8-megapixel camera, probably using Sony Exmor optics. There’s 8GB of onboard storage plus microSD support and the bodyshell is made from aluminium.
The Xperia L is supposedly a 4.3-inch handset with a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, an 8-megapixel camera, the same 8GB of onboard storage and microSD support, plus a 1,700mAh battery pack.
LamdaTek prices the Xperia SP at £312.98 and the Xperia L at £219.18 while stock is expected by March 19. Assuming this isn’t a monumental slip-up we can probably expect official word from Sony to emerge very soon. Micro Aid, selling to the Irish market, lists the handsets in Euros, but also correlates on the stock date with March 12 as the expected arrival.
The handsets follow Sony’s much-hyped Xperia Z flagship and Xperia Tablet Z tablet. It’s not yet clear whether these mid-range additions will share a similar design language and likewise whether they’ll also feature the same water and dust proofing technology and Sony’s upgraded Mobile Bravia Engine 2 display tech.
You can probably expect both phones to run the new Sony UI overlay on top of Android.
