Sony’s latest mid-range models, the Xperia SP and Xperia L, have been priced for the European market.
The Xperia SP will costs 419 euros SIM-free, which in the UK is around £359.
This handset features a 1.7GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, 4G LTE connectivity, an 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera with LED flash and a 4.6-inch 1280x720 pixel display powered by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and sporting a pixel density of 319 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
The lower-end model, the Xperia L, is priced at 279 euros (£239) and is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, HSPA+ connectivity, the same 8-megapixel camera and a 4.3-inch FWVGA (854x480 pixels) resolution display at 228ppi.
Both handsets comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the Sony UI overlay, along with NFC, 8GB of onboard storage and microSD support for 32GB cards.
Both phones present an affordable alternative to Sony’s flagship, the Xperia Z, while the Xperia SP shares many design features with the hero model.
Sony has massively upped its game in recent months with a much cleaner and less intrusive UI while consistently offering up-to-date Android builds and fast Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The company’s camera technology is also top-notch.
It’s fast becoming a key player in the Android phone market and now sits in second place behind Samsung with the biggest market share.
The company is also making headway with its tablet efforts as the Xperia Tablet Z has been largely well received by critics.
Exact release dates aren’t yet known for either of Sony’s new affordable handsets but they’re pegged to arrive at some point in Q2.
We’re thinking it probably won’t be very long if prices are emerging already and Sony usually has a pretty quick turn-around time.
You can probably expect UK networks to start revealing tariff details fairly shortly.
