The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will have a flexible display according to the OLED Association.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the rumour of flexible display technology on forthcoming Samsung handsets, the Galaxy Note 3 in particular. It’s widely known Samsung is working on the technology and the company showcased some of its prototypes at CES 2013 in January.
However, this is the first time we’ve heard anything on the subject from the OLED Association (OLED-A), a market group and forum for companies involved in OLED tech.
In a post on the OLED Association website, the group states:
‘Samsung Electronics Company (SEC) will exhibit a new Galaxy NOTE 3, featuring an unbreakable OLED display at IFA 2013 in September and plans to launch the product in Q4’2013.’
Rumour surrounding Samsung’s use of flexible OLED displays suggests it will be incorporated in a conventional fashion (rather than a bendable, transforming form-factor) and is intended to offer a shatter-resistant alternative with greater durability than solid Gorilla Glass.
OLED-A believes Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 will ‘utilize a plastic substrate’ instead of a glass one as seen on the Galaxy Note 2. The report suggests a display size between 5.9-inches and somewhere over 6-inches, possibly the rumoured 6.3-inch size which we’ve seen on the Galaxy Mega 6.3.
The display tech will apparently be ‘thinner and lighter than the conventional glass substrate type OLED’ and the phone may be 8mm thick or possibly thinner. It could also accommodate a larger battery pack behind the thinner screen.
OLED-A does add that its doesn’t expect Samsung to be able to produce a Full HD resolution using flexible OLED tech, so the display resolution will likely be lower than the Galaxy S4’s 1080p Full HD.
