ZTE has announced its oddly named Geek smartphone, powered by Android and an Intel Atom chip

ZTE has just announced its new smartphone known as the ZTE Geek. The name might sound ridiculous but the phone is powered by Intel’s Atom mobile chip.

As well as the 2GHz, 32 nanometre (nm) Z2580 processor with 1GB of RAM, the handset boasts a 5-inch display with a 1280x720 pixel resolution, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and 8GB of onboard storage.

The rear of the device houses an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash while on the front is a 1-megapixel secondary. Power comes from a 2,300mAh battery pack.

We’ve seen Intel chips at work before inside the Motorola Razr i and the results were very impressive to say the least. According to ZTE’s release information the Z2580 is Intel’s new generation Atom chip.

‘Tests show that compared to Intel’s previous processor, the Clover Trail+ processor is twice as fast for computing and three times as fast for graphics. It also reduces power consumption,’ ZTE stated.

This is also the same chip powering Lenovo’s K900 flagship, which recent benchmarks pegged as faster than the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Images have emerged from coverage of the IDF conference in Bejing, where the ZTE Geek was unveiled. It’s a pretty sharp looking device on the whole, with a slightly Nexus-like front fascia and a contrasting white rear panel somewhat reminiscent of HTC’s recent Android models.

‘Our recent collaboration with Intel on the ZTE GEEK builds on the success of the Grand Series and further enhances our competitiveness in the high-end smartphone market,’ said ZTE executive vice president and head of mobile devices He Shiyou

ZTE hasn’t revealed what kind of price tag the Geek might have or where it will be released. We’ve contacted ZTE’s representatives for more information and will update as we learn more. Stay tuned.
