Meteor Crater is a 50,000 year old meteorite impact site in the northern Arizona desert. It boasts the title of the largest discovered impact crater in the United States and the best preserved meteorite crater on earth. The scientific community calls it Barringer Crater in honor of geologist Daniel Barringer who first suggested the impact was produced by a meteorite.

The mile-wide and 570-foot-deep crater has become a tourist destination as a result of its proximity to the historic Route 66. Visitors can explore the crater along outdoor observation trails, get a close-up look at the 1,406-pound Holsinger meteorite—the largest discovered fragment found in the area—and take photographs atop the Meteor Crater Overlook.
