Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch coming to IFA 2013 September?

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch may be launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013 next month

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch may be coming to IFA 2013, the tech conference taking place in Berlin from September 6.

Manufacturer events are actually kicking off a few days before though, with Samsung itself is gearing up for a Samsung Unpacked event on September 4 where it will launch the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 3. According to SamMobile, Samsung will use the same event to reveal its smartwatch to the masses.

Samsung Galaxy Gear diagrams have leaked previously and it bears the codename SM-V700, but to date nobody’s seen a photo of the actual device. It’s thought that the smartwatch will be based on Android, will act as a companion device (probably via NFC/Bluetooth) to other Samsung smart devices, including phones and tablets, and may even be the first device to launch with a flexible OLED display.

Sony has already announced its own smartwatch, the Sony Smartwatch 2, which it revealed alongside the Sony Xperia Z Ultra in June. It’s known to function similarly as a companion device running an Android build and can display messages sent to your smartphone as well as using specialist apps. However, the Sony Smartwatch 2 has been delayed until September 9.

Apple is also known to be hard at work on the iWatch, but as usual it is saying nothing about what we can expect from the device.

Samsung is also keeping the Samsung Galaxy Gear’s capabilities firmly under its hat at present, so it’s not clear if it will outgun Sony’s offering in terms of features, but there’s not long to wait until all is revealed with IFA 2013 being just around the corner.
