There’s always been something sentimental about Nokia, probably stemming from the time when almost everybody, at least in the Western world, had a Nokia handset. Unfortunately, these days, for us Android-ians who won’t jump ship to a Windows Phone, we’ll never get a chance to experience Nokia’s new and generally intriguing hardware a la the 41 MP Carl Zeiss lens on the Nokia 925. And now with Microsoft buying over the mobile operations at Nokia, the possibility of a Nokia ever running Android is now over.
For Thomas Zilliacus, however, this isn’t the end of that Android dream. As Nokia’s former Asia Pacific CEO, he is starting a new Singapore-based phone manufacturer called Newkia (why does that sound familiar?) and plans to use Android as the choice OS on their phones. He’s even trying to poach Nokia employees who wanted to work on Android in the hopes they can bolster their team and launch a Newkia phone in the Asian market within a year.
It’s a tall order, but if they can eventually make something like the Nokia 925 or Nokia 1020 running Android, it could be something special. What do you think about all this? Would you consider a Newkia if it borrowed some inspiration from Nokia phones? Let us know what you think in the comments.
