Spotify has announced it is to allow mobile access to its service free of charge. Much like the desktop version of the music streaming app, it will be supported by adverts and features such as the amount of listens per song will still be restricted on the free version of the service.
Until now Spotify Mobile has only be available to its premium customers who pay £10 a month. The new free app will be available on smartphones and tablets alike. It won’t work exactly like premium free version does though, as it works through shuffling. Unlike services such as Last FM or Pandora the user can decide which music act they want to listen to but can only listen through shuffling their back catalogue.
CEO of Spotify Daniel Ek announced the news at a conference in New York saying they had "proved that you can actually make this a business.” He said the new mobile service was something the company had always wanted to do, adding: "The more music you listen to, the more likely you are to pay.”
Spotify also announced it would be expanding to 20 new countries including Peru, Chile and Malta.
But the real big news of the day was legendary English rock band Led Zeppelin have brought their entire back catalogue to the streaming service. Some legendary acts are still not available on streaming sites including AC/DC and The Beatles.
