It’s about as suspiciously suspicious as suspicious leaks get, but reports indicate Google could be gearing up to offer a wider range of colour options for the Nexus 5 flagship.
PhoneArena received an anonymous tip with some fuzzy, shaky-cam video showing a tweaked Google Play store with a listing of the Nexus 5. The footage shows eight colour choices including the usual black and white, but added to the mix are yellow, purple, blue, green, orange and red.
The video shows the tipster clicking through each colour variant but there’s no additional information on when a rollout might occur. If at all, indeed, this could easily be a fake – putting together a mock store page with clickable colour choices would be a piece of cake for anyone even remotely skilled with a Flash builder program.
PhoneArena then received a slideshow of the individual colour choices, but again, this would be an easy fake in something like Photoshop.
Of course, we’d very much like to imagine Google is in fact diversifying its product portfolio and giving customers more choice. And it’s not a totally wacky idea anyway, considering Google is closely affiliated with Motorola – a company which has really pushed the whole “all the colours of the rainbow” customisation approach in recent months with the Moto X and Moto G, likely with some prodding from Google.
Certainly there is a growing trend towards wider colour choices, Nokia has done it for a while but plenty of other manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon. Even Apple diversified its colour options with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.
Perhaps the big G has been planning this for a while?
For now though, we’d recommend taking this with a pinch of salt until either more solid leaks start occurring or Google says something official.
