Mobile gaming birds have returned but this time they’re very mild mannered

Flappy Bird is taking the latest sensation in the mobiel gaming space. It has taken both the App Store and Google Play Store by storm. Is having a bird-based game the key to success? Probably not, as it turns out, Flappy Bird just "got lucky" according to its creator.

Flappy Bird is a very simple concept and the game mechanic is basic in itself. Tap the screen to stay afloat and avoid Mario-style pipes in the process. See how far you can get and compete with your friends. Simple.

The creator has revealed it took him two days to make the entire game. Dong Nguyen made the game and now admits he “got lucky.” The creator from Hanoi, Vietnam has three games in the Top 10 on the App Store, all are free but contain advertising.

In an interview with Techcrunch he said, “I don’t know how my games can be so popular. Most of my players are kids in schools. I would like to thank them for playing my game and sharing it to other people."

Nguyen is 29-years-old and has run the .Gears Studio, which created Flappy Bird, Super Ball Juggling and Shuriken Block, for four years.

"Mostly, we're making arcade games that are bite-sized, take no more than a few minutes of playing right on smartphones and tablets. Our work is heavily influenced by retro pixelated games in its golden age. Everything is pure, extremely hard and incredibly fun to play."

He also told Chocolate Lab Apps, “All the programming took around 2-3 days at best with all the tuning to make the gameplay feel right. In my games, there is no impossible situations that players cannot pass.”

That’s not to say the game isn’t a little buggy though. When playing you can feel the game was built in a hurry, during some playthroughs the bird won’t even touch a pipe and you’ll still manage to fail.

But that’s the kind of title Flappy Bird is, you’ve just got to accept it and move on. The real difficult part of the gameplay is relaxing and not becoming uptight every time you fail - which will likely happen a lot.

Flappy Bird hasn't landed on Windows Phone devices yet but will be there in the next 10 days according to the creator. That means you should be able to play the addictive title by Valentines Day 2014.
