HTC Back In Line To Build Nexus Tablet?

Google's next Nexus tablet could be made by HTC in Q3 2014, reports claim

HTC could be taking over Asus and Samsung’s duties as the builder of Google’s next Nexus tablet, according to reports out of Taiwan.

Focus Taiwan claims Google has selected HTC to build the next Nexus slate, but it’s an intriguing choice as the company hasn’t made a Nexus device since the original smartphone model and hasn’t made a tablet since the flop that was the HTC Flyer.

“HTC is said to have won orders for a high-end model of the Google Nexus tablet line that will begin shipping in the third quarter of 2014,” the report said.

Perhaps this move has come primarily at HTC’s request? The company is in a pretty bad way at the moment and LG’s Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 builds have done wonders for the Korean company’s profile in the broader mobile space.

Of course HTC has declined to comment about the rumour and Google – of course – is also typically silent when questioned about such things. There’s very little which has been suggested about the next Nexus slate and whether it will follow up the Nexus 7 2013 or the Nexus 10 – although some rumours persist of a Nexus 8. Fans have been expecting a Nexus 10 2 for months now but with very little emerging in terms of believable leaks and not a peep from the big G itself.

It’s intriguing though that the report mentions the model will be “high-end”. The Nexus 7 has typically been a fairly high-end piece of kit with a low-end price point, hence its appeal, while the Nexus 10 was a premium model with higher specs. Of course, a possible Nexus 8 could slot in at either bracket.

We’ll bring you more when we hear it.
