Sony Unveils Super Thin "Digital Paper Tablet"

Sony’s tablet range is growing but this time with something a little different

After unveiling the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 at Mobile World Congress 2014, the company has taken a different route with its latest tablet. Sony has just shown off the “Digital Paper tablet” which uses an e-ink display.

It’s designed specifically for office use and comes with an A4-sized touchscreen. The whole device is only 7mm thick - that's actually thicker than the Xperia Tablet Z2.

It allows you to display documents and write on top with annotations on the display. As it’s only an e-ink display it means it’s low-powered and can survive for three weeks without a single charge.

There’s 4GB of internal storage onboard with the option of using microSD cards on top. It also comes with a specific stylus to write over Adobe PDF documents displayed on the screen.

The screen on the device is specially designed by Sony and is called a "Mobius" display. Instead of glass displays which usually accompany e-ink this is built on top of plastic. It means a much lighter device whilst still using e-ink technology, Sony claims it is half the weight of the glass alternative.

Sony is trying to mirror the uses of paper through the device, even though it’s touchscreen you can even lean on the device whilst you write. It isn't flexible, however.

The Digital Paper tablet also connects up to Wi-Fi to access files from the web but doesn’t come particularly cheap. When it launches in May it’ll cost around £660.
