iPhone 6 – Big and Bold

A new report suggests the sapphire display, long rumoured for the iPhone 6, will only come to some models

Numerous rumours and leaks have suggested the iPhone 6 will be coming with a sapphire display on the front. It’s even been pictured a couple of times with one guy taking a knife and a pair of keys to the display to see if it would survive. The display did survive the testing with no damage at all, but it looks like that super-tough display wont feature on every iPhone 6 handset.

A new report courtesy of JP Morgan Securities is suggesting there wont be enough sapphire displays to go around all the iPhone 6 models in production. It’s looking pretty likely the sapphire display is only for certain versions of the iPhone 6 and wont feature on the handset across the board.

According to the rumours, reported by the Taipei Times, there will only be 10 million sapphire displays produced by the end of the year. Apple is obviously hoping for larger sales than that.

It’s not clear which version of the phone will end up getting the sapphire display. Some sources are pointing toward it featuring on the traditionally most expensive version, the 128GB iPhone. Others believe Apple may be saving it for the phablet 5.5in device, which is rumoured to be in production.

JP Morgan Securities believe it costs around $45 to create one sapphire display whilst a Corning’s Gorilla Glass only costs around $10. By that logic we can expect to see the display on one of the most expensive versions of Apple’s new phone.
