To coincide with the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 930 flagship, Microsoft has just announced a new app available free for Nokia Lumia devices called Video Tuner. Video Tuner is essentially Microsoft/Nokia extending its same bespoke approach to video editing that we’ve seen with its other highly capable imaging suites included on Lumia phones; Nokia Smart Cam, Nokia Pro Cam, and the rest.
That means it’s a very slick little package designed specifically for use on your phone’s touch display, with an intuitive looking interface to make the whole affair easy for new users, yet a depth of features for more advanced movie makers. Naturally you can crop and trim footage to adjust the length of the clip and cherry pick the exact moments you want. But on top of this you can adjust the brightness and saturation, apply filters, add music tracks and other audio, rotate, adjust the aspect ratio, zoom, and crop.
You can even set your clip up specifically for uploading and sharing to Vine, Instagram, and a number of other services, however, while the promo video suggests this is done directly from the app, Microsoft clarified what’s actually possible with the app right now:
“Video Tuner can save videos in the Vine format; however the Video Tuner app does not directly share videos to Vine – sharing videos is managed by the Windows Phone platform and there is currently no feature in Windows Phone to share to the Vine network. We have added support for saving in Vine format with the hopes that sharing to Vine will soon be enabled.”
At the moment a key limitation seems to be that this software is only for Nokia Lumia devices rather than Windows Phone handsets in general (although to be fair, the majority of the Windows Phone space is Nokia Lumia devices) and they must be running Windows Phone 8.1. That update is coming to Nokia’s broader portfolio fairly soon, but out of the box that only includes the Lumia 930 and Lumia 630/635 right now. The application is free to download from the Windows Phone Store and supports MP4 video and MP3 audio, all edited videos are saved as MP4s. The app supports MP4 files recorded directly “on the same device where Video Tuner is installed”, while audio you can add must come from the Music folder aboard the device, although it must meet certain criteria:
“Video Tuner supports adding a non-DRM protected MP3 audio track to a video; for example, MP3 files copied from a PC to Windows Phone, MP3 files purchased from the Xbox Music Store or Lumia’s MixRadio application,” Microsoft said in a statement.
It looks like a pretty well-rounded bit of software and is sure to enhance the experience of Nokia’s impressive PureView camera hardware, which you’ll find aboard the Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930.
