During Google I/O, Sundar Pichai surprisingly was heard touting Samsung’s Knox security platform, despite market adoption of the technology sitting at less than 2%.
Samsung is ‘giving’ Knox to Google, who will now take the lead on Android security, and with Knox obtaining US Department of Defence accreditation, it seems a stable foundation for Google to build on for Android security, which has often been the center of focus when it comes to criticising Android.
Google taking on Knox seems perfectly sensible, and it also provides Samsung with some brownie points in a time where their profits are struggling, publicly cementing them as a solid partner with Google.
A recent report by Forbes seems to agree that this is the way it will go, and whilst there are a few questions still left unanswered when it comes to backward compatability and distribution mechanisms, it appears Knox will be the focus for Android security going forward.
