Samsung announces new Galaxy Apps Store for its Android devices

Samsung might have the weight of success behind it but that doesn’t make some of its business decisions seem any less peculiar – case in point, the phone maker has just launched the Galaxy Apps Store for Samsung Galaxy Android devices.

You might be forgiven for thinking Samsung already has an Android app store for Galaxy phones and tablets. You’re half right, it used to – there was the Samsung Apps store pre-installed on Galaxy devices, but that was recently closed down without much fanfare. We though that’d be the end of the rather daft idea that an alternative to Google Play is needed on an Android device, but no, Samsung has other ideas.

What’s the advantage of Samsung’s new storefront? Well you get a choice of hundreds of applications designed specifically for Samsung Galaxy devices, many of these are exclusives you won’t find elsewhere. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether that’s better than the 1.2 million and counting applications on Google Play.

“An improvement upon its predecessor, Samsung Apps, the new app store features apps that will allow greater customisation of mobile devices and will also function as a platform to offer various promotions and discounts,” wrote Samsung, in its announcement blog post.

The store includes three main tabs. Best Picks is for user-recommended content, and Top is for the most downloaded applications. The last section, For Galaxy, is itself divided into four sub-sections: Galaxy Essentials, Apps for Professionals, Galaxy Specials, and Galaxy Gifts.

Samsung wrote a bit of blurb describing what each sub-category is for:

“Galaxy Gifts offers premium apps exclusively for Galaxy devices. Galaxy Essentials delivers must-have apps for Galaxy devices. Apps for Professionals is the home of business focused apps and other services that fully utilise the features of Galaxy devices. Galaxy Specials lets users download apps specifically created by using Samsung SDKs.”
