Snapchat Users Prefer "Funny Content" To Sexting

Snapchat has always had a reputation for naked photos but its actually used more for cat pictures and selfies

Snapchat’s reputation, at least in the mass media, is for sexting and nothing more. But it turns out more of the photos on the service are silly selfies, pictures of animals and just for doodling over your photos.

The University of Washington undertook some research to find out how Snapchat users were interacting with the app. The researchers polled 127 Snapchat users all aged over 18 and found 60% of the users' used the app to send “funny content.”

The second most popular was the selfie. Only 14% of the people polled admitted to sending sexts on the service whilst only 1.6% of the people interviewed said they did so on a regular basis.

The problem with this research is the fact not everyone is going to admit to sexting on the service. We reckon that number may be a little higher if the research had been anonymous.

When speaking to the MailOnline the researchers admitted there is still a market for a more secure app. They said: ‘Nevertheless, we observe that a non-negligible fraction (but not a majority) of respondents adapt their behaviour in response to Snapchat’s weak security properties, and thus conclude that these users may still have a use for a more secure messaging application in addition to the more casual, fun-focused Snapchat.’

PQChat offers a more secure service for those who don’t want any old person looking at their naked Snaps.
