By now we’re sure you’re more than familiar with the Sony World Photography Awards – one of the world’s leading photography competitions presented by the World Photography Organisation and Sony. Last night, at the beautiful Somerset House, a host of the world’s best amateur and professional photographers gathered to celebrate this year’s Sony World Photography Awards ceremony and gala dinner.
The evening marked the final award announcements, where Getty Images photographer John More was awarded the grand prize of the 2015 L’Iris d’Or / Sony World Photography Awards’ Photographer of the Year title. Chosen from 13 Professional category winners, the winning work “Ebola Crisis Overwhelms Liberian Capital” is a hard-hitting series of images that cuts to the heart of one of 2014’s most pressing tragedies. Below’s one of his winning images.
Also in attendance was Turi Calafato, the Italian photographer who won the inaugural SWPA Mobile Phone category award. We’ll be catching up with Turi over the next few days to find out what the story is behind his eye-catching beach photo and why he thinks mobile phones are so crucial to the future of photography, so stay tuned for that!
We’ve collected some of the winning shots in the gallery below, but for a full list of all of the winners at last night’s SWPA event head over to the World Photography Organisation’s page.
All of the winning photography at this year’s awards will now be on display at an exclusive exhibition at Somerset House, London, running till May 10th – so don’t miss your chance to see the stunning shots first hand.

From photography to film now, as Sony Entertainment Pictures have this week announced plans to create an animated Spider-man feature film. Announced on Wednesday at this year’s annual CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the new animated film featuring our favourite web-slinger will be written and directed by the Oscar-nominated team behind the much-celebrated LEGO movie, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
The animated feature is set to be realised on July 20, 2018 but if you’re a die hard spidey fan and can’t wait that long don’t forget you’ll be able to catch your favourite superhero amongst others in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
That’s not the only collaboration we’ve seen this week with Sony also pairing up with Ford bringing an industry first to consumers by incorporating the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum with the latest Sony home audio systems.
To show off the quality and capabilities of the new sound system, Sony & Ford transformed Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station into a nightclub but the usual stack of speakers were replaced with the new Ford Explorer.
The system will, for the first time in history, feature Live Acoustics (a feature that will enable drivers & passengers alike to feel as if they’re sitting in the sweetest spot of a concert hall) and Clear Phase (which replicates listening to that of a live concert) providing listeners with an unbelievable audio experience.
That’s it from us this week – enjoy your weekend!
