Many people have role models, Kei Okuda’s (@kei__okuda) just happen to exist in her imagination. Using a ballpoint pen and blots of watercolor, the 25-year-old aspiring illustrator brings her interpretation of “admirable girls” to life. “Modest yet fashionable, and hairstyles that are in trend — I try to draw girls who I want to be like, and who I think are charming,” she explains.

Last June, Kei left her hometown in Japan’s Mie prefecture and moved to Tokyo in pursuit of her lifelong dream of becoming a picture book illustrator. Some of the friends she’s made on her journey are people who have shown interest in her artwork on Instagram. Joining photo walks and InstaMeets, Kei is finding joy in preserving fun moments, and even being a model herself for other people’s photos. “Although there’s no direct connection between photography and my drawings, I think it does have some impact on my illustrations — like my favorite expressions on friends’ faces and the atmosphere of the changing seasons,” says Kei. “After all, my drawings and photos are both captures of my favorite things.”
