Koji Kitagawa debunks the myth that a dog is man’s best friend. His closest chums are the horses at Paard Musée (@onbokujyo), a horse ranch and his workplace located in the southern end of Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture. “Horses are big animals and are far stronger than humans, but they trust and depend on people,” says Koji. “When you want a horse to do something, you have to find nonverbal ways to communicate your thoughts and feelings — and that’s the attraction I don’t find in other animals.”
Paard Musée is home to over 30 horses composed of 10 different breeds, including indigenous Dosanko horses, as well as foreign breeds like the Camargue, which is originally from France. “Each horse has a different personality,” Koji explains. “There are those that love to be around people, and there are others that are a bit mean.” Tending to the horses every day is taxing, but Koji thrives on his interactions: “The more you put into caring for the horses and the more involved you become with them, the more you and the horses learn from the growing relationship — and that’s the beauty of it all.”
