“#MyStory is about sidestepping the classic hero’s narrative that omits the darker, shadowy parts of our own history.” —Stacy Kranitz (@stacykranitz), Time magazine’s Instagram Photographer of the Year
“We should celebrate our lives for what they are: a complicated negotiation between good and bad, darkness and light. I’m not a person that sees the world as a beautiful, Utopian place. It’s not about overcoming great obstacles to be wonderful people; that’s not the narrative that I choose to participate in.
My job is to create genuine encounters so things unfurl and open up on both ends — for me and for the subject. When I go to communities and build relationships with people, they’re the same as relationships I build with fellow artists. I accept people for who they are, for their deep flaws, for the darkness that surrounds them, and allow that to be completely OK.”
