How Germany’s Jesper Munk Became an American Blues Singer

Jesper Munk is a 22-year-old musician from Munich, Germany. Before his Berlin Fashion Week performance this evening at @lalaberlin, he spoke to Instagram @music about his upbringing and love of the blues.

“I never wanted to play music because I didn’t want to do the same thing as my dad. But when I was 16, a few guys from my school came up to me. They thought that I could play bass because my dad was a bassist. They asked me to play in their band. I was too shy to say no. I told them that I couldn’t play, but it was more of a,‘You know, I’m not that good, so maybe the lead guitarist should figure out the bass lines and then I am just gonna play that.’ But I was more interested in playing the guitar and writing songs, because I saw what songwriting did for people. My dad and the frontman of the band he played in, they both seemed kind of relieved after writing a song. It just fell off their hearts.

“The music [my band] played was really loud, weird alternative music. So we were pretty limited to what the styles were. Then we got into ‘60s and rock and roll music. If you look for the root of all that, then you land on the blues. It just kind of stuck.”

“I wanted to, and am still trying to, figure out how I sound. With my second album, Claim, [it’s about] the whole journey and the whole finding out who I am musically, searching for a musical identity — that’s all in there. It’s pretty polarizing. I didn’t want to accomplish anything but being honest.”
