Maria Lax (@maria_lax_) attributes her love of the night to science fiction films and a childhood filled with Finnish folklore. “There is an interesting mix of religion and then superstition,” the photographer and filmmaker from Oulu, Finland, explains. “Because that’s my background, that’s the lens that I see everything through.” To create a supernatural vibe, Maria scouts her old haunts for locations that manage to glow on the darkest, foggiest Nordic winter nights. “The last time I went out taking pictures, it was something like -25 Celsius [-13 Fahrenheit] … it’s usually the camera that stops working before I stop functioning.”
