4 Apps That Help You Make, Learn, and Do

There’s never been a better time to learn how to do all the things you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the resources available to learn how. Technology and the maker movement have made it possible to learn how to do everything from tango to make a cabinet; all you have to do is download a few apps and get started. Need some app recommendations? We’ve got you covered.

Duolingo

Duolingo is a language learning app that has all the elements of a game, so it’s nearly impossible to put your phone down once you’ve started. While there aren’t a large number of languages available to learn through Duolingo, it has robust “courses” for the languages it does feature. Those languages are: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Irish, Danish, Swedish, Russian, Ukrainian, Esperanto, Polish, Turkish, Norwegian, and Welsh.

Duolingo

To get started with a language, you can either start as a complete beginner or take a placement test to start at a level that matches your current skills. Courses start with basic training, where you learn key words and phrases through different exercises including photo and word matching, sentence translation, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and voice-recognized pronunciation. With each completed lesson you get closer to a daily goal and 100% fluency.

Duolingo is free, educational, and far more fun than any of the courses you took in school. Give it a try!

Coursera

If you want to get more serious about learning, look no further than MOOCs: Massive Open Online Courses, which are often offered by prestigious universities around the world through companies like Coursera. Coursera offers an extensive library of university courses covering multiple topics across genres like Business, Data Science, Arts and Humanities, and Personal Development.

Coursera

Coursera is accessible online, but the app makes it easy for users to find interesting classes, enroll in them, and catch up on lecture videos and content from anywhere. Many Coursera classes are free, and the site also offers specializations and certificates if you want to pursue a set of courses that can directly impact your career.

The app is free and it’s easy to sign up for an account. Try it out if you’re ready to really up your knowledge game.

Craftsy

Craftsy is a great app to download if you’re ready to get seriously crafty. The site and app feature courses for all sorts of craft projects, from knitting and crochet to gardening and baking. The teachers of these courses are top caliber and well-known for their work. Classes do cost some money, but once you’ve signed up for a class it’s available to you forever.

Craftsy

You can also buy crafting supplies on Craftsy, so once you’ve decided on a project, just hop over to the Supplies tab and buy what you need to get started. There are even kits available for specific projects.

This site and its app are a dream for anyone just starting out with crafting, but it’s also a great resource for seasoned veterans. The app is free and signing up on the site is free, as well.

Instructables

Instructables might just be the ultimate resource for making and doing…well, almost anything! But aside from its sheer vastness, Instructables’ true value is in the community behind it. Individual Instructables are submitted by community members and include detailed instructions, supply lists, and progress photos. You can download instructions for your favorite projects, leave comments, and follow your favorite Instructable makers.

Instructables

The Instructables community also runs regular contests with partners, in which makers can submit their projects to win prizes like laser cutters, 3D printers, iPad Minis, and more. And, of course, project winners get bragging rights!

Signing up for an account on Instructables is free, and the app is free, so get to making! And if you’re feeling adventurous, submit some of your own projects to share!
