“#hellomynameis David Uzochukwu (@daviduzochukwu). I’m a 17-year-old photographer from Austria, and I currently live in Brussels. I started taking pictures when I was 10. I was too frightened to ask anyone to let me photograph them, which is what got me into self-portraiture.
Sometimes, I’ll slip into a character; sometimes, I’ll show something that is purely me. Somewhere between acting and confessing, I get to learn more about myself. Instead of projecting my idea onto someone else, I’m the only one in a photograph — I’m completely responsible for it. Doing that over and over again made me a lot more confident in who I am and who I want to be.
I slowly have started to photograph others as well; I especially felt the need to ever since I moved into a city. People’s diversity fascinates me, and I’m very inspired by how fragile and strong humans can be at the same time. I want to acknowledge their struggle and empower them and create work that is full of tragedy, but also wonder and hope. Everyone deserves to feel seen and understood. It’s so important to me to portray people in a way that does their humanity justice — it’s not being done enough.”
