Ghostly Muses: The Otherworldly Embroidery of Carrie Violet

Inspiration floats all around embroidery artist Carrie Violet (@memorialstitches). Literally: Her muses are ghosts. “I lived near a very big stately home and its lady had a jilted lover,” says Carrie, an English illustrator who learned how to stitch her delicate, ethereal pieces only a year and a half ago. “She walked into a lake, so ever since she floats around haunting passersby. Another lady got her head chopped off and she rides headless through the glen on horseback,” she says. “You have to watch out for her!”
Though Carrie’s artwork often begins with death, it’s less spooky once it’s stitched. “I’ve had comments saying, ‘Your work makes me think of the fragility of human existence, but there’s also a real sense of hope there as well.’ I think that’s really nice.”
