When it comes to starting a new venture, be it a blog or a fully-fledged website, you first have to register a domain for your business and/or project. But what are the best options for those new to online ventures?
The internet is big business these days, has been for a while now, and this means there are a whole host of competing services when it comes to domain registration, web hosting and CMS options.
Here we’re going to look at domains, as there the first thing most people tend to acquire when setting up a new online project. Today we’re going to be looking at Namecheap and GoDaddy, two of the most well known options on the web.
GoDaddy and Namecheap are both excellent options for both complete novices and seasoned professionals. Both are feature-rich, easy to use and, most importantly, cost effective. But which out of these two options is the best?
Let’s find out shall we.
NameCheap vs GoDaddy: Price
Domain providers are pretty notorious for their long-game business models; they lure you in with the promise of uber-cheap domain registration and then sucker you after the first year, once you’re locked in, with higher and higher prices.
For this reason, we’re going to take a look at the average cost of domain renewal on both GoDaddy and NameCheap. That way we have a better idea of which service is the cheaper option in the long run.
- GoDaddy runs at $14.99/yr for .com domains.
- Namecheap runs at $10.29/yr for .com domains.
In this respect, Namecheap is the more cost-effective option. But what about other things? Things like features, ease of use and extras. Shivar Web, a thoroughly decent resource for all things web-related, has outlined the PROS and CONS of each service, which you can view below:
Namecheap: PROS & CONS
- Has trouble with auto-renewal on occasion
- Very straightforward checkout process
- Good suggestion engine
- Knowledgebase is pretty well put together
- Chat support is super-fast, but lacks phone support
- Bare bones design (for good and bad)
GoDaddy: PROS & CONS
- Confusing checkout process
- Domain manger opens separate window – and feels weird like the domains are off-site
- Suggestion engine offers too many upsell suggestions
- Clean colour scheme – but cluttered with upsells
- Knowledgebase is very extensive
- Email and chat support are ok – phone support is good
Both Namecheap and GoDaddy offer decent levels of service, as well as similar feature-sets, but a lot of people tend to prefer Namecheap. GoDaddy has been involved in a few controversies over the years and, while it does offer fairly decent prices for its services, Namecheap has grown in popularity for its stance on open internet regulation in recent times.
I like Namecheap, mainly because it’s so simple to use. I also appreciate its open stance on the importance of the web being open and free for everybody. For this reason, I’d recommend Namecheap over pretty much everybody else right now. Namecheap also has a VASTLY superior iPhone and Android app available for on the move management.
And it’s not just me, either. Check out these reviews of Namecheap from around the web:
- Helge Sverre – “No upsells, clean and friendly interface, hassle-free checkout, easy management, Go buy a domain right now.”
- The Only How – “NameCheap has been outstanding for me! I was looking for different hosting providers but when I looked at NameCheap I bought it with coupon. They have brilliant live support and once also fixed my site. My site is never down and server response time is great. NameCheap just simply rocks! I was recommended to use NameCheap and I recommend to use NameCheap.”
- Who Is Hosting This – “Support is always top notch and all my queries are solved in quick time interval. It has all the known features that are needed for setting up your website from user friendly cpanel to one click script installer. Being a very satisfied customer I would recommend Namecheap hosting to anyone. Thank you Namecheap for the quality service and support.”
