Samsung president of mobile DJ Koh has grabbed headlines at CES by outing the firm's official launch event of the Galaxy S9 series at MWC 2018 in February. However, some other comments made at the same time by Koh - on the subject of the folding and flexible Galaxy X launch - have also jumped out, though here they are cause of some concern.
According to Koh's comments, as reported by ZDNet and Korea's ETNews, Samsung now plans to launch the Galaxy X next year - as in 2019 - despite it being Koh who told reporters in 2017 that a 2018 lauch was on the cards. He added that the main obstacle in getting the phone ready for consumers is the software UX, which is proving something of a problem. Presumably this has something to do with optimising the UX for best functionality on both sections of the display whether folded or unfolded.
ETNews' report details information from industry indsider sources, claiming that Samsung plans to put the Galaxy X into mass production by November 2019.
The report said that Samsung will "develop foldable displays by March and manufacture panels in September."
"It is planning to manufacture final products in November. It is assumed that Samsung Electronics will release actual foldable Smartphones in December or early next year."
The report also noted that Samsung is allegedly currently privately showcasing prototype flexible OLED devices to industry partners at CES 2018.
ETNews' report also added some details regarding the design and functionality.
"It is likely that Samsung Electronics’ foldable Smartphones will have 7.3-inch flexible OLED displays that are folded inwardly. This allows people to use these Smartphones as normal Smartphones on regular days and use them as tablet by unfolding them."
"Samsung Display will be in charge of manufacturing foldable displays. It is currently working on them so that foldable Smartphones do not leave any trace when they are folded and that foldable displays work very smoothly."
