The ASUS ZenFone 5Z landed at MWC 2018 and it looks, well… kind of familiar. The handset, which is being called an iPhone X clone, looks really nice and will retail for just $500 – so 50% less than Apple’s iPhone X.
ASUS has even copied the iPhone X’s notch, though it says the notch on the ASUS ZenFone 5Z is 25% smaller. The handsets, when compared side by side, are remarkably similar. The camera unit is positioned and sized almost identically, the notch looks the same, the shape of the phone looks the same. Hence the word “clone” being thrown around.
But who cares, right? The ASUS ZenFone 5Z costs just $500 and it packs in some very decent specs. Apple charges too much for the iPhone X, so I can’t say I really care about anyone ripping off its design (when Apple’s just as guilty of that anyway).
Inside the ASUS ZenFone 5Z you’ll find some KILLER specs. This phone is serving up some serious value for money in a world seemingly drunk on the idea that flagship phones should cost around $1000.
I mean, just check out what you’re getting for $500:
- Snapdragon 845 CPU
- 8GB of RAM
- 16MP wide-angle camera
- 8MP on the front
- 3300mAh battery
- 256GB of storage
- SD-support
Sure, the design has been more or less lifted from Apple’s blueprints. But as I said earlier: who the hell cares? This phone is bringing some much needed value for money to phone space, and with specs like what it’s packing, I think plenty of people will be taking a serious look at this handset.
The only thing I’m not 100% sure about is the display tech; some sources say it’s IPS LCD while others claim OLED. I’m going to do some digging and then I’ll update this report once I know more. Even without OLED, I’d still be inclined to love this handset – it’s just what the space needs right now.
Make no mistake: the specs for the ASUS ZenFone 5Z are easily on a par with what Samsung released at MWC. But because ASUS isn’t a brand-name in the mobile space, you’re getting access to them for a lot less. I am seriously impressed by what’s on offer here. And I kind of like the way it looks too.
