Apple just dropped the all-new 2018 model iPad Pro–and it’s the biggest change to the iPad in its history. While there are little differences between the two new 2018 iPad Pros (one is a 12.9in display and one is an 11in display) there are tons of differences between the Pro and Apple’s “regular” iPad, the 2018 model of that the company introduced earlier this year.
So just what are those differences? Glad you asked! Let’s dig in.

We’ll get to the big difference (the display) in just a bit. But first, let’s take a look at some of the major internal differences between the Pro and the regular iPad. The biggest differences are in the CPU and storage department. The A12X Bionic with Neural Engine processor found in the Pro means the thing will wipe the floor for the regular iPad when it comes to processing power. Literally, it will be over twice as fast as the regular iPad’s A10 Fusion in some instances.
The iPad Pro also comes in four sizes: 64, 256, 512GB or 1TB. The regular iPad now only comes in 32 or 128GB options. As far as connectivity goes, things are different there as well. While both feature the same basic wireless connectivity, the iPad Pro does away with the Lightning port found on the regular iPad in favor of the USB-C standard. This means you can connect peripherals like external cameras, displays, and even an iPhone directly up to the iPad Pro.
The Pro line also features Smart Connector support for smart keyboard cases so they can draw their power directly from the iPad Pro and support for the new Apple Pencil 2, which now offers wireless conductive charging when you snap it on magnetically to the Pro’s edge. The Apple Pencil 2 also features touch and gesture control on the Pencil itself.
It’s also worth noting the iPad Pro has four internal speakers, so the sound quality of audio should be much improved over the regular iPad and its two speakers.

Of course, the biggest difference between the Pro ad the regular iPad is the design. The new iPad Pros feature edge-to-edge displays with Face ID while the regular iPad still features thicker bezels and the Touch ID home button.
The technology in the displays isn’t all that different, however. Besides larger screen resolutions, all displays are LED-backlit with Multi‑Touch and IPS technology built-in. They also all offer 264ppi. However, the iPad Pro has an enhanced display with features such as True Tone and wide color built in. Wide color allows for a more vivid color gamut and the True Tone display means the Pro’s display will automatically change color based on ambient light in the room, which means it will look more natural—the way paper does when you work on it.

The final major differences between the iPad and the iPad Pro are in the camera department. The iPad Pro features a better front and rear camera (5MP and 12MP, respectively; and each of these shoot 1080p and 4K video, respectively). The rear camera on the iPad Pro also has a flash. The cameras on the regular iPad are relatively weak in comparison: 1.2MP/720p front and 8MP/1080p rear–and the rear has no flash.

Here’s the rundown of the various costs for the different models of each iPad:
- iPad Pro 12.9in: 32 GB £969, 256 GB £1119, 512 GB £1319, 1TB £1719 (add £150 on for the cellular model).
- iPad Pro 11in: 32 GB £769, 256 GB £919, 512 GB £1199, 1TB £1519 (add £150 on for the cellular model).
- iPad: 32 GB £319, 128 GB £409 (add £130 on for the cellular model).
As you can see, the iPad Pro is significantly more expensive than the iPad. But cost shouldn’t be the deciding factor for which you buy. You should get the iPad Pro if you are a professional in the video, graphics, or design industry and you want a touchscreen tablet to work on. Or you should get the iPad Pro with Smart Cover if you want to ditch your laptop and carry around a tablet replacement.
But for many people, the regular iPad is a good fit if all you want to do is browse the web, play games, and send emails. In short, the iPad is an everyman device. The iPad Pro, one the other hand, as the name suggests, is designed with professionals in mind.
