iPad 5 tipped for October launch

Apple’s iPad 5 is expected to launch in October and share more than a passing resemblance to the iPad Mini, claims report

The iPad 5 will launch in October and will look quite a bit like the iPad Mini, according to a new report from iLounge.

The report also speculates about Apple’s plans for future iPhone models, claiming larger and cheaper variants are both on the cards.

Horwitz claims to have seen a ‘supposedly accurate—and seriously intriguing—physical model of the completely redesigned fifth-generation iPad.’

Writing about the alleged iPad 5, Horwitz said, ‘it’s a lot smaller than one would guess was possible: in portrait orientation, picture a 9.7-inch screen with virtually no left or right bezels, and only enough space above and below the screen to accommodate the mandatory camera and Home Button elements.’

He added: ‘Beyond that, it’s noticeably thinner, as well, which is to say the fifth-generation iPad will be smaller in every dimension than its predecessors.’

The report also suggests that Apple’s iPad 5 will be the first tablet device from Apple to feature IGZO display technology and smaller chip components.

In terms of a launch date, Horwitz says that Apple initially intended to launch the iPad 5 in March but has now pushed the date back to October due to issues with component yields.

Apple has not spoken officially about its plans for the iPad 5.
