iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 set to feature Retina display tech?

The iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 may be getting Retina displays if a note to developers rings true

Apple’s iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 will both boast Retina display technology, according to a bulletin posted to developers of iOS apps.

Apple posted a note to devs yesterday via iTunes stating that all future iOS applications should be built with Retina display-toting devices in mind, which would appear to suggest that the dark pre-Retina display days are coming to an end for all devices.

The note read, 'Starting May 1, new apps and app updates submitted to the App Store must be built for iOS devices with Retina display and iPhone apps must also support the 4-inch display on iPhone 5. Learn about preparing your apps by reviewing the iOS Human Interface Guidelines,' which appears to be a fairly conclusive statement: Develop for Retina display or don't develop at all.

The comments would also appear to confirm rumours that the company’s iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 will both launch with seriously upgraded display technology, news which is likely to please folks that were interested in the iPad Mini before they realised that the display was way behind those offered by cheaper devices running Google’s Android OS.

Rumours suggest that the iPad Mini 2’s screen will offer up a pixel density of 324ppi, which is way ahead that of the current iPad 4. The device is also rumoured to share the iPad 4’s resolution of 2048x1536 pixels.

The iPad 5, on the other hand, is odds-on to sports Sharp’s industry leading IGZO technology, which will permit Apple to produce a device that is both slimmer and lighter, whilst simultaneously being sharper and brighter than the display offered in previous models. Both devices are widely expected to launch with iOS 7 on board.

You may not have to wait too long to get your hands on the iPad 5 too, as rumours are strongly linking the device with a launch date of June 29th alongside the iPhone 5S, but the iPad Mini 2, which was initially believed to be headed for the same event, has apparently been held back to the holiday season.
