It seems like everyone is busy putting together their own concept renders of how they wish Apple’s iPhone 6 might look. The latest, from artist Arthur Reis, throws in a market trend championed by Sony – a waterproof bodyshell – as well as a completely new take on the traditional iPhone Home button.
In this design, the Home button would function similarly to the Apple Magic Trackpad found on its Macbook laptops – the entire bottom section below the display is a capacitive touch panel with the usual button icon sitting in the middle, where the physical button used to be.
A tap anywhere on the panel registers as a home button press. As flashy as this sounds it could lead to some problems with registering accidental input, but it’s a neat idea all the same.
Some earlier rumours have suggested a future iPhone could sport a capacitive Home button ‘strip’ along the bottom panel which would accept taps and swipe gestures for various commands.
Obviously the waterproofing isn’t visible in the concept, but Reis envisions a handset which will be submergible up to a depth of 10m. Not only that, but it’s supposed to be more robust than earlier models and capable of surviving falls of up to 12m.
It’s difficult to get a sense of scale for the phone, but it appears to be larger than the iPhone 5 and with an almost edge-to-edge display, suggesting it may be around the 4.5-inch mark, while the handset has been slimmed-down even further to a mere 6.1mm.
The camera is revamped and is rated at 12-megapixels with a f/1.8 aperture. That’s extremely wide and would allow for plenty of light, f/2.0 is generally considered pretty good, but if handled improperly by accompanying tech and the built-in software this can cause problems with exposure. Samsung has notoriously tended to stick to f/2.4 as it works best with the rest of its tech, while HTC has consistently found a way to make f/2.0 to work well with its own setups.
