Samsung’s Game Pad accessory for the Galaxy S4 and other Galaxy smartphone devices is now available to pre-order in the UK for £89.95.
The device is listed on Mobile Fun, where you can grab it in white, though there are no details on exactly when it’ll be available, it’ll likely land alongside the Galaxy S4 itself, which is expected in April.
The Galaxy Game Pad features a full set of console-grade controls, including two analogue sticks, a D-Pad, shoulder bumpers and four front-facing buttons.
It uses Bluetooth 3.0 to wirelessley pair with your smartphone and if you like you can even link the phone to a TV via MHL for a console-like experience.
According to Samsung, the device is compatible with any Galaxy smartphone running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or higher and has been confirmed to work with the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 Mini and Galaxy S3.
The expandable cradle will accommodate display sizes from 4-inches to 6.3-inches and the controller itself is powered by AA batteries.
Samsung has worked with Google and Android game developers so that around 80 games on Google Play will be compatible and optimised when the Game Pad arrives. It’ll also come with eight free games bundled-in.
Portable gaming is one area where mobile has overtaken from conventional handheld console devices such as the PS Vita, due to the wide-ranging distribution via Google Play and relatively low price of games.
However, control input has been the one obstacle many developers and accessory makers have failed to beat. Could Samsung’s backing push Android gaming into a new golden era? We hope so.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is an extremely powerful device ideally suited to mobile gaming with its massive 5-inch Full HD 1080p display and Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.9GHz.
