We’ve already seen leaked benchmarks suggesting the Samsung Galaxy S4 would have a PowerVR SXG 544 graphics processing chip, but now the company behind the GPU, Imagination Technologies, has officially announced its hardware is inside the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chip.
While the announcement doesn’t specify the much-anticipated Galaxy S4 flagship as a carrier of said hardware, at this point there are few other realistic options for Samsung’s next Galaxy S device.
Multiple leaks and benchmarks have pegged the phone with a clockspeed of 1.8GHz, which matches up with Samsung’s own released specs from its announcement of the Exynos 5 Octa at CES 2013 in January.
The PowerVR SXG 544 GPU comes in two varieties, one is a triple-core 544MP3 and the other a quad-core 544MP4.
Samsung’s previous Galaxy S flagship, the Galaxy S3, and its associated devices such as the Galaxy Note 2, used the Exynos 4412 quad-core chip with an ARM Mali-400MP quad-core GPU.
It’s worth pointing out the Galaxy S2 also used a Mali-400MP chip while the original Galaxy S had a PowerVR SGX540.
Hardware guru site Anandtech claims to have discovered the Exynos 5 Octa uses the 544MP3 triple-core version, though doesn’t disclose a source, saying: ‘We couldn’t disclose how we came to this conclusion publicly.’
A triple-core should save on power consumption, which would pair up well with Samsung’s ARM big.Little eight-core architecture in the Octa 5.
The chip uses a 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 quad-core cluster alongside a 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 and switches between the two to optimised high performance and battery efficiency.
Samsung is scheduled to launch the Galaxy S4 on Thursday March 14 at 11pm UK time. We’ll be on hand to grab all the new information as it emerges so stay tuned to Know Your Mobile to get your Samsung Galaxy S4 fix.
