Samsung Galaxy S4 to feature eye-tracking technology?

Samsung's Galaxy S4 could use some cutting edge eye-tracking technology that allows you to browse through web pages without using your hands

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature eye-tracking technology that will let users scroll through web pages and menus simply by using their eyes, claims reports. Eye-tracking will be just one of the features Samsung unveils next week at its Galaxy S4 launch event in New York.

The news comes via The New York Times which claims to have spoken with sources close to Samsung that have tested the Galaxy S4 and confirmed that it does indeed feature eye-tracking technology – technology that eradicates the need for physical input when scrolling or browsing.

‘When users read articles and their eyes reach the bottom of the page, the software will automatically scroll down to reveal the next paragraphs of text,’ said the report. It added, ‘Samsung in January filed for a trademark in Europe for the name “Eye Scroll” (No. 011510674). It filed for the “Samsung Eye Scroll” trademark in the United States in February.’

It sounds ridiculous, but in the current smartphone market there’s very little disparity between handsets’ specs. To stand out from the crowd requires added USPs, ones like HTC’s UltraPixel camera and Zoe feature, Sony’s water and dust resistant devices, and Samsung’s alleged eye-scrolling.

In its February trademark filing, Samsung described the technology as follows:

‘Computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.’

Expected to feature a 1080p display, 1.8GHz Exynos 5 Octa CPU, and 2GB of RAM, much like everything else on the market at present, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 – if Galaxy S3 sales are anything to go by – is likely to be one of the biggest selling handsets on the year despite stiff competition from Sony, HTC, and Apple.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy S4 on March 14.
