Google is hosting its Google I/O conference in May which will see the launch of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, a new Nexus 7 tablet and a Nexus 4 reboot with 4G and 32GB of storage, reports claim.
According to Ubergizmo, the updated Nexus 7 will arrive in July with a Full HD display and a narrower bezel around the outside edge. It’ll include both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, though we suspect Wi-Fi-only models will be available too.
It’s not clear whether there will be a 4G variant but it’s said Google is replacing the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip with an updated Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad instead.
Qualcomm’s chips are known to include 4G connectivity capability within the chipset but this does require calibration and, with the Nexus 4, Google left it latent. It’s rumoured the new Nexus 7 will be thinner and lighter than its current counterpart.
It’s not known what the title for the device will actually be, whether it’ll just be Nexus 7, Nexus 7 2, or something different entirely.
It’ll still be made by Asus and will reportedly retail at the same price as the current model, which would mean £159 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only model, £199 for a 32GB Wi-Fi only model and £239 for the 32GB mobile data-enabled variant.
A Nexus 7 reboot makes sense when you consider how well the first model was received by consumers and how the iPad Mini, Amazon Kindle Fire and other competitors have also performed since.
Apple is said to be gearing up to launch an iPad Mini 2 and there are rumours of a 7-inch Surface tablet from Microsoft for the new Nexus 7 to compete with.
Know Your Mobile talked to an Asus spokesperson who couldn’t comment on the rumours.
