Nokia announcement tipped as Asha 501

Nokia is announcing a new device this week which may be the Asha 501

Nokia has revealed it will announce a new mobile device on Wednesday April 24 and has published a teaser image showing what appears to be a physical Qwerty keyboard.

Posting on the official Nokia Conversations blog, Nokia said it would be announcing ‘something new’ along with a Q&A session from Neil Broadley, a member of the company’s mobile team, and an unnamed mystery ‘special guest’.

It’s not clear whether this is a Windows Phone 8 device under the Lumia brand or, as some are suggesting, a Nokia Asha, although the latter seems more likely. Currently rumours point to the Asha 501.

Neil Broadley has historically been closely tied to the Asha range and was present at the unveiling of both the Asha 205 and the Asha 301. He even described himself as an ‘Asha devotee’ in an interview with Nokia Conversations.

From the image all we can see is that it’ll be brightly coloured in yellow (presumably there will be other colour options too), that it has a fairly narrow bezel around the screen and two keys, one is an arrow key and the other looks like a ‘Z’ key from a Qwerty keyboard. Feasibly, the arrow could be a ‘shift’ key.

Leaked specs for the Asha 501 include a 1GHz processor, a 3.5-inch AMOLED touch display, 3G data connectivity and a 5-megapixel camera. The Asha range is marketed as affordable touch-capable feature phone devices and run Nokia’s S40 operating system.

Obviously there’s no hint at pricing at this point, but Nokia Asha handsets typically range from around £50 to £130. If the Nokia 501 does have a 1GHz processor we’d expect it to be higher up in the range and somewhere closer to £100.

We’ll be covering Nokia’s launch as it happens so stay tuned for more info.
