North Korea has revealed to the world it has its very own smartphone called the Arirang.
The people’s ‘hand phone’, which is sure to bring glorious prosperity, was shown to Dear Leader Kim Jong-un when he visited a factory. The visit was covered by state media.
The Arirang name apparently comes from a popular folk song, according to the BBC. Kim was photographed trying out the smartphone, which apparently runs a build of Android, though of course it will have been heavily tweaked as you cannot access the internet or make calls outside of North Korea with the phone.
‘The leader was accompanied by the Korean Workers' Party propaganda chief and the head of the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), a hint that the devices could be used for widespread dissemination of government information,’ the BBC reported.
According to a state media release, Kim praised the device for its ‘high pixels’, apparently referring to the camera. He added the smartphone would have ‘educational significance in making people love Korean things.’ Or else.
Clearly Kim has plans for further mobile products as he instructed factories to ‘select and produce shapes and colours that users like.’
No further specs or features were detailed about the Arirang but it likely includes some kind of strategic missile targeting and guidance system and a GPS for tracking...everyone.
There’s also this brilliant photo, showing the Korean army officers in their funny hats and some guy weighing out a white powdered substance. Obviously when the glorious leader said he wanted the phone to come with ‘great speed’ someone got the wrong end of the stick.
Expert commentators have suggested the phone will likely have been manufactured in China to order and then shipped to Korea for inspection before being sold locally. Some comments have suggested as many as 2 million people in North Korea have pre-registered to buy the Arirang already.
