The HTC One Max has appeared in a photo posted online showing the extra large device posing next to its smaller siblings, the HTC One and the HTC One Mini. The image also shows the handset equipped with a fingerprint sensor.
While there’s been much talk of Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 5S carrying a fingerprint sensor very little has been suggested on that front for other manufacturers, so it comes as something of a surprise to see HTC jumping on the tech as well
As per previous rumours, the HTC One Max follows in the footsteps of the HTC One and HTC One Mini by using the same aluminium unibody design but this time on a larger scale – it has a 5.9-inch full HD display.
The alleged fingerprint sensor is just a little black square under the camera port, but according to Chinese source ePrice that’s exactly what it is. It’s not yet clear what HTC has planned for the digit-recognising panel but there are a number of possible applications.
Most obvious is that it’s another alternative method of unlocking your phone instead of passwords, PIN numbers, patterns and voice or face recognition.
In Apple’s case with the iPhone 5S there’s been plenty of talk about a fingerprint scanner being used in conjunction with a new eWallet remote payment service, but no details have emerged as to what this might entail at this stage.
Could HTC have something similar planned?
Another picture shows what appears to be some kind of dock connector, suggesting HTC may release a charging/data cradle accessory or something similar.
Other rumoured specs for the HTC One Max include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and the return of HTC’s Ultrapixel camera tech, although whether it will remain 4.3-megapixels or be bumped up to something like 8-megapixels remains to be seen, we’re hoping the latter. Some sources also claim the HTC One Max will be the first HTC One device to come with a microSD slot.
The HTC One Max is expected to launch during the IFA 2013 conference in Berlin, Germany, which starts on September 6.
However, a number of manufacturers are conducting major launches in the city in the few days prior to the main event, with Samsung pegged to unveil the Galaxy Note 3 phablet and Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4 at a Samsung Unpacked event and Sony also planning to launch its Honami smartphone on the same day.
