Nokia is allegedly working on a new Windows Phone 8 smartphone dubbed the Nokia Bandit, which, if reports are true, will be a 6-inch full HD 1080p phablet device with a quad-core processor.
The Nokia Bandit name is obviously a working title as the Finnish company consistently brands its Windows Phone products under the Lumia label and with number based names. The Nokia EOS, for instance, became the Nokia Lumia 1020.
The news of the Nokia Bandit comes courtesy of The Verge’s anonymous ‘sources familiar with Nokia’s plans,’ and it’s claimed that the device will break cover by the end of 2013. According to the details it’s business as usual on the processor front in the sense that it’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, but it will be a quad-core number. The Verge also said the Bandit is ‘the first of may planned 1080p Windows Phone devices.’ No surprise there then.
Staying true to form on pushing the camera capabilities, Nokia is said to be including a 20-megapixel setup for the Bandit’s main shooter and it will only have a ‘slight hump’ which is described as similar to the Nokia Lumia 925.
‘We understand the Bandit is thin and lightweight, and includes a polycarbonate body,’ the report states.
Microsoft has long been known to have plans for a new version of Windows Phone 8, thought to be coming later this year, which will include support for many features we’ve seen for a while on Android rivals. Most notably, full HD 1080p displays and quad-core processors. Multiple reports say the 1080p screen support will introduce a new column of Live Tiles to the Start screen.
The Bandit is believed to be undergoing testing at US network AT&T and will arrive before the end of the year. Expect leaks to start appearing from AT&T testers in the not-too-distant future.
We just hope it comes in black with a massive gold phoenix on the back. A denim case would be optional, as would the moustache.
