Motorola working on a flexible smartwatch

Motorola has filed a patent for a flexible smartwatch, but way before the current wearable technology craze

We’re hearing of smartwatches and flexible smartphones every day but Motorola seem to be combining the two ideas. The US Patent and TradeMark Office has shared a patent application by Motorola revealing the company is working on a smartwatch with a flexible display.

The patent was first filed on June 19 2012 by Alberto R Cavallaro, way before the current rush of smartwatch announcements.

The patent focuses on “a flexible chassis module” which is then coupled with a display module. The patent states, “This method allows flexing of an electronic device with a flexible display for curved viewing, if desired, or bending with minimal stress.”

The aim of the smartwatch is to create a display which will also bend with the wristband element of the watch. Considering the patent was filed over a year and a half ago, we could see some news of a flexible Motorola smartwatch in 2014 as the company is probably already well stuck into the development process.

We are expecting a bunch of smartwatch releases and announcements in 2014 including rumours of the Apple iWatch launching with the iPhone 6.

LG has been pushing its new LG G Flex flexible handset which will be available in 2014. You can view and try out the LG G Flex in the UK in some EE stores now. It seems 2014 is set to be the year of the flexible display.
